Hip and elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, dwarfism and some heart disorders typical of the breed can be prevented by careful screening the breeding stock and culling sires and dams with defective genes. Unfortunately, some breeders aim at gaining maximum profit and produce puppies without caring much for their health and for the improvement of the breed in general. Some unknowledgeable owners breed their dogs without any idea of hereditary disorders; they just want to have purebred puppies.

Fearful dogs can become fear aggressive or fear biters. They should be good pack dogs as they were bred to protect and defend the families they live in. Adopted animals can also make good guard dogs if treated and trained carefully. There are many reasons why dogs get into trouble and require help of the rescue organizations as sometimes they are left by their owners on purpose, sometimes they are lost in the street. As the breed requires time and patience, some owners find they do not satisfy these requirements and they give the dog up.
