It may be hard to find a puppy at a rescue, but you can view photos and make your choice.
As the dog is "double-coated" it needs a lot of care. It has a "down" type undercoat next to the skin, with longer, coarse hair as an outer shell. Under normal conditions, the dog will only require regular brushing, and an occasional bath. Though the coat is very dense and the dog can easily live outside enduring low temperatures, it is not recommended to leave the dog outside alone for a log period of time. These are very people-oriented hounds giving preference to living close to their owners.

Prior to purchasing a German Shepherd dog, it’s recommended to go to dog shows, visit breed clubs, talk to other owners of these dogs and watch a training class. It gives a clear-cut idea about the cost of owning such a large, active and intelligent pet. Both high quality and pet quality pups need much time and attention to grow into reliable and well-behaved adults. Lessons should be regular, interesting and with positive motivation. Occasional training sessions, drill and harsh methods will do nothing but harm. Sometimes, professional training is recommended.
