As a matter of fact, the dog was randomly bred before the late 1800s. Only the best dogs that worked well were selected for breeding. Beginning from the 20th century a strict breeding program was undertaken to develop the dog into a more uniform breed. Thus the newly developed breed progressed and gained the popularity until the early 1900s. When the WWII began, all things related to Germany (even language) became taboo including these dogs. The fate of the dogs was in doubt. To save the breed its name was changed to the Alsatian.

Though grooming needs of this breed are rather low, these dogs need much time and attention. These large and strong animals are perfectly adapted to living outdoors, but they should not be only outdoor dogs. Being very intelligent, these dogs enjoy mental and physical activities and like to participate in shows. Their exercise needs are high. It’s necessary to spend several hours a day training a pup of this breed, socializing, walking and playing with it.
