Generally speaking, health and temperament are the priorities in this breed. Conformation is not very important, if it doesn’t interfere with working abilities. Most colors are acceptable in this breed, but strong rich colors are preferable. Pale, blue, liver, or washed-out colors are disqualifications. Old-type working dogs that remained in East Germany are larger and darker compared to the modern variety of the breed. White dogs were disqualified from the shows, but now they are considered a separate breed and don’t compete with dogs of traditional colors.
