They don't care for profit, but for the improvement of the breed in general. Don’t be surprised, if a breeder refuses to sell a purebred puppy to you. These are working dogs that were mainly bred to be herding dogs and prior to the late 1800s, these sheep herding dogs were randomly bred, and only those that worked well were selected. As the 20th century approached, a strict breeding program was undertaken in Germany. The aim of the program was to develop the randomly bred dog into a more uniform herding dog characterized by versatility and intelligence. The newly developed breed progressed and gained popularity until the early 1900s. Thus, in the year 2003 the breed was one of the top 10 breeds.
